Jacksonville, FL

History

Jacksonville has a rich history rooted in early Native American settlements and European exploration along the St. Johns River. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people before becoming part of Spanish Florida in the 1500s. Jacksonville was officially incorporated in 1832 and named after Andrew Jackson, who served as Florida’s first territorial governor. The city played a strategic role during the Civil War and later became a major transportation and logistics hub due to its port and rail access. According to the City of Jacksonville, consolidation in 1968 merged the city and county governments, making it the largest city by land area in the United States and fueling its long-term growth and development across Northeast Florida.
