Naples, FL was founded in the late 1880s as a planned resort destination along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Early promoters named the city “Naples” after Naples, claiming the bay was more beautiful than its Italian counterpart. The city was officially incorporated in 1949 and gradually evolved from a quiet winter retreat into an upscale coastal community. Development accelerated after the completion of the Tamiami Trail, which improved access to southwest FL. According to the City of Naples, its pristine beaches, warm climate, and planned growth helped establish it as one of the most desirable residential and vacation destinations in the state.
