History

St. Petersburg was founded in the late 1800s by John C. Williams of Detroit and Peter Demens, a Russian nobleman who helped bring the railroad to the area. The city was officially incorporated in 1892. According to local legend, the name was decided by a coin toss. Demens won and named the city after his hometown of St. Petersburg, Russia, while Williams named the city’s first hotel after Detroit. Early milestones include the launch of the world’s first commercial airline flight in 1914 between St. Petersburg and Tampa. Over time, the city grew into a beloved Gulf Coast destination known for sunshine, arts, and waterfront living.
