History
Orlando began as a small frontier settlement in the mid 1800s and was officially incorporated as a city in 1875. Before that, it served as a military outpost during the Second Seminole War, with Fort Gatlin playing a key role in the area’s early development. The origin of the name “Orlando” is widely debated, but one popular story links it to Orlando Reeves, a soldier said to have died protecting settlers. Another version suggests it came from a Shakespeare reference. A major turning point came in 1971 with the opening of Walt Disney World, which transformed Orlando into a global tourism destination and reshaped its economy and identity.
